I’m starting something new this evening: “King Louie’s Soul-Jazz Jam” on Wednesdays at the Rose Room Bar and Grill. I’ll play an opening set with the King of the Saxophone, Renato Caranto, and drummer Micah Kassell beginning at 8 pm, then the sitting-in will begin. We test-drove the idea a couple Thursdays ago and had a number of fine young musicians join us. I’m hoping this can become a regular thing. There have been lots of blues and jazz jam sessions in Portland for as long as I remember, but never one that focused on the funky side of jazz: ala Eddie Harris, Jimmy Smith, Horace Silver, Stanley Turrentine, etc. This gig should be a ball, for musicians, listeners, and dancers as well! (The Rose Room Bar & Grill features a spacious dance floor.)
